In the battle of Marathon (490 BC) an army of Athenians faced off against an army of Persians over twice their size. Through brilliant battle strategy and the valor of each Grecian soldier defending their homeland, the Persian army was driven back and defeated. The messenger and solder, Pheidippides, ran to deliver the victorious message of the battle to Athens over 25 miles away from Marathon.
